Doctor Japan

While the title of this post sounds like the name of some cliche racist-stereotypical spy supervillian, it actually has nothing to do with any of that. It is just an anime version of Doctor Who feature Jon Pertwee's Third Doctor. Enjoy!:

It features many notable villains, including the Daleks and Davros, the Cybermen, and two incarnations of the Master. It was also neat to see more obscure villains like Sutekh, even though he wasn't actually seen until the Fourth Doctor's Pyramids of Mars. Seeing the Doctor using his Venusian karate he favored as the Third Doctor was pretty good too. Overall, if the BBC ever actually commissioned a Doctor Who anime, I would watch it in a heartbeat.

Sushi-matic

I love sushi. No, I LOVE sushi. And so this post is about sushi, which I could really use right now. Unfortunately the nearest sushi bar I know of is 4 hours away so I either must make it on my own or wait. I have made it before and the local health food store sells all the ingredients (although it is VERY expensive there), but I am still not at the skill level I need to be to not make a big mess. Every time I make it, rice gets everywhere! I either make it too sticky or not sticky enough. I need one of these:

It's the Suzumo SushiBot and it was just announced at the World Food and Beverage Great Expo 2012 in Tokyo. Suzumo manufactures a wide variety of sushi making machines, and if you check their website you can see just about everything they have. This particular model churns out 300 rolls of sushi in one hour to then be sliced into individual pieces, but if I had this thing I'd probably just keep stuffing rolls down my throat, savoring every moment. Speaking of sushi, another Japanese company is starting to sell laser etched nori (the seaweed). Here is a picture:

I personally think that is really creative. It would be really neat if they'd later let you do custom patterns. More details here. I'm not sure why I'm writing about this, it is just making me want sushi more, and my recent discovery that there exists all you can eat sushi buffets as close as Chicago is driving me crazy. I feel a visit is in order, even if it is just to stick things in my mouth.

New Background!

I've decided that, having had the image of the three Ewoks for approaching one year now, I should change it up! I stumbled on this image at about 4am this morning in what was yet another sleepless night. For some reason it just stuck with me. The cute Wokling innocently fending for his life all by himself. I somehow felt I could relate to the image. I felt like the Wokling, alone in this world, surrounded by evil, with nothing but a lightsaber katana*. I also changed the main color theme from an orangish-brown to the green it is now. Other than that this blog features the same tasty goodness!

*And not those cheap ones either! This one is legit.

Music...Sort Of

Sorry for the delay in posts. I asked someone what I should post about next and he said "music". Of course since I haven't really listened to music since I tragically deleted my entire iTunes library, I spent many days thinking of what to post. And since I haven't had the motivation to add back numerous gigs of sound over the past year I am going to go with a cop out: Legos...making music! Behold!

Legos are kick ass! Yes, I realize the proper term is "Lego", even for plural, but who really follows that anyways? Plus, Legos have always been the cool thing, who wants to make them lame with grammar rules? As someone who will buy my nephews Legos whenever I can, just so I can play with them it all makes me think of a quote I read once. I'm probably butchering it, but it went something along the lines of "Engineers are just adults who still play with Legos". True indeed!

Drawception

I have recently become addicted to a game called Drawception. It is similar to Draw Something where someone submits a phrase such as "Yoda debates Sarah Palin" and another person draws a picture of that phrase like this:

The difference from Draw Something is that it doesn't stop there, and just like the Energizer Bunny it keeps going and going by having someone describe that picture and someone else then drawing that new description. It continues until 12 people have played, so six pictures and six descriptions. Ultimately, just like a game of telephone, the message gets garbled and the final outcome has Yoda being a violent sexist:

This is a real game that happened on Drawception. I started it and it quickly blasted into the the top 10 and held the #1 spot for over a day (top 10 is just the past 12 hours). Just hit the link to see the rest of it. It is quite a fun game and I hope this post gets more people to play even though it is pretty popular. The first few days the servers were bogged down due to so many people. They've since upgraded and it runs smoothly, and is worth tons of laughs. Have fun!

Norway

The lovely city of Trondheim, Norway has put together a video to attract tourists. I thought it was quite good! There is pleasant music and attractive sites. Watch the video here:

Phoenix Down!

Alrighty, I haven't blogged since September. Yikes. I guess I got sort of busy. But now I am contractually obligated to post 69 more blog posts! Woo hoo! So, since it's been a while I figure the first post back needs to include Ewoks in one way or another.

Recently I bought the entire Star Wars set on bluray. Over the past two weekends I watched both trilogies: prequels first then the originals. This is the first time I've actually watched the entire Star Wars film saga in chronological order. Last time I watched them all it was with someone who hadn't seen them before so we watched the original trilogy first. And prior to that not all the prequels were out so I couldn't have then.

First off, let me comment on how Star Wars is in HD. In the prequels it was quite nice, I think it worked best in The Phantom Menace due to a mixture of models and CGI for special effects. Once it got to Attack of the Clones it was quite jarring jumping to the CGI. The detail in the scenes with real people was excellent, but then jump to a scene of all CGI and it was even more obvious it was fake (even though Lucas upped the resolution in the CG parts). Episode III it wasn't quite so bad since a lot of those scenes were faster paced, but it was still noticeable. In the original trilogy the jumps to the added CGI scenes was even more jarring I'd say, since those films have an older feel to them so even in HD the picture wasn't as crisp. Granted, the films were still of high quality and it was both more beautiful but also ironically easier to tell that it was a film. In a few of the interior shots of the Death Star you could tell the set was just painted wood and some of the aliens do look more rubber like. Most of these complaints are just in Episode IV though since the rest had a better budget. Ironically, once I got to Empire Strikes Back I was so used to the CGI Yoda from the prequels that the muppet version just seemed odd despite feeling the opposite when originally seeing the prequels.

Story wise I was surprised how well everything flowed. Even some of the obscure lines in Ep IV make it sound like it was made after the prequels due to how consistent it was. Granted there is an abundance of evidence showing that George Lucas never planned the whole story from the get-go, but with the cross-references between the two trilogies it almost makes his claims believable. I didn't have any issues with the changes Lucas made, a lot of them I thought it better, especially the blinking Ewoks. The one I did have issues with was the changed Krayt Dragon call Obi-Wan does in A New Hope. I just don't like the sound. Overall I'd say Return of the Jedi was my favorite with Attack of the Clones my least favorite.
